Grapes of Wrath was structured as a "walking play" in which the audience travelled through a 100 acre working farm to 14 different "stations" spread throughout the farm.  The set was built using wheat paste techniques, and incorporated portraiture of local farmers, and other community members and locations connected to land production in the area.  Much of the scenic elements were designed to serve as permanent fixtures on the farm, long after the show had closed, so that those touring the farm, would be shown other local people connected to the local agricultural community.
